Did you know? According to the B.C. Fire Code and NFPA Standards 10 Fire Extinguishers require both monthly and annual inspections.
A monthly inspection can consist of
Inspection of the pressure gauge. Insure the Gauge shows no sign of moisture and that the needle falls within the proper designated area. Generally Green. But not over or under as it will affect the performance of the fire extinguisher itself.
Check that the pull pin is secured and in place. Not bent or cracked. Anything that would impede its use.
A visual check of the cylinder's shell, no damage, rust, broken or cracked hoses and handles.
This Monthly check can be provided by an in-house employee or a trained and certified Community Fire Prevention Technician if you would feel more comfortable.
The Annual Maintenance Inspection, however, ensures that each portable fire extinguisher is in safe operating condition in case of a fire and must be carried out by a certified Community Fire Prevention Technician.
The annual maintenance involves
Weighing of each individual unit to correct manufacturers specifications
Removing and a thorough check of each hose and assembly
Thorough check of all parts, pieces and overall physical condition of each extinguisher
Recording and Recertification Tagging of each individual unit
