Did you know? Fire Alarm Systems are required to be maintained in operable condition at all times. As well, fire alarm systems shall be inspected in conformance with ULC-S536 (per the National Fire Code) and the BC Fire Code (BC Fire Alarm Code 6.3). This sub-referenced code requires monthly and yearly testing to ensure complete operability and help prevent false activations. Records must be kept by the building owner/manager for examination by the insuring agent and/or the authority having jurisdiction.

Did you know? Automatic Sprinkler Systems (wet and dry) are required to be maintained in operable condition at all times. Maintenance and inspection is required monthly, quarterly and yearly as mandated by the B.C. Fire Code and National Fire Code. These inspections ensure the systems are operable and ready for use should the need arise. Did you know? According to the B.C. Fire Code and NFPA Standards 10 Fire Extinguishers require both monthly and annual inspections.
A monthly inspection can consist of
Inspection of the pressure gauge. Insure the Gauge shows no sign of moisture and that the needle falls within the proper designated area. Generally Green. But not over or under as it will affect the performance of the fire extinguisher itself.
Check that the pull pin is secured and in place. Not bent or cracked. Anything that would impede its use.
A visual check of the cylinder's shell, no damage, rust, broken or cracked hoses and handles.
This Monthly check can be provided by an in-house employee or a trained and certified Community Fire Prevention Technician if you would feel more comfortable.
The Annual Maintenance Inspection, however, ensures that each portable fire extinguisher is in safe operating condition in case of a fire and must be carried out by a certified Community Fire Prevention Technician.
The annual maintenance involves
Weighing of each individual unit to correct manufacturers specifications
Removing and a thorough check of each hose and assembly
Thorough check of all parts, pieces and overall physical condition of each extinguisher
Recording and Recertification Tagging of each individual unit

At Community Fire Prevention we will make sure all emergency lighting work is completed to B.C. Fire Code Standards. Simply walking up to the unit and hitting the test switch quickly does not qualify as an annual emergency light test on such a vital piece of equipment.
Emergency Lights provide you and your staff with the necessary lighting required in corridors, stairwells, ramps, aisles, and exit passageways during temporary power outages in order to exit safely. If your emergency lights fail to operate properly during these occasions, exiting the building safely can become a real nightmare.

Did you know?The National Fire Code states that a functional test shall be conducted on every required emergency lighting system at 30-day intervals for a minimum of 30 seconds. This test can be performed by an in-house employee or a Community Fire Prevention Service Technician.
The annual test shall be conducted for the prescribed amount of time as required under the B.C. Building Code. The battery charger itself must also be inspected to insure that the charger is providing the required amount of voltage and current to properly maintain the batteries charge within each unit. Written records of visual inspections and tests shall be kept by the owner for inspection by the authority having jurisdiction.
An annual service test consists of
Prescribed amount of time full function test
Disconnect AC power supply to each emergency light
Check battery and lens for sulfation
Clean each emergency light and lens as required
Adjust beam for proper alignment
Troubleshooting/repair may also include
Checking and adjusting charging system voltage
Checking battery output voltage
Check line voltage to remote fixtures
Place Testing Tag on the emergency light and Record in Testing Log

Did you know? A Backflow test report confirming the passing functionality of each device must be sent in to the city/municipal waterworks department every year.

Did you know? The B.C. Fire Code states that all hydrants are to be inspected at intervals know greater than 6 months. These tests ensure that hydrants are maintained in proper operation for use by your local fire department. Hydrants must also always be kept free of obstruction for easy access as you never know when trouble can strike.
