FIRE HYDRANT INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS

As per NFPA 25:

Private Fire Hydrants (both Wet & Dry Barrel) shall be inspected at intervals not greater than 1 year and again, immediately after every incidental operation.
All testing and maintenance procedures shall be carried out in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
Manufacturer specifications state that maintenance will require the removal of the internal operation parts for visual inspection, lubrication and replacement of worn or damaged parts.
Upon removal, lubrication and reassembly, the Fire Hydrants are then serviced for operation to ensure that the isolating gate valve was turned back on and that the hydrant is left in working order.

As outlined in Part 6 Section 6.4 of the BC Fire Code the testing, inspection and maintenance procedures of the private fire hydrant shall be done in accordance with NFPA 25 and manufacturer’s instructions. Q: Who’s responsible for maintaining Annual Fire Inspections?
A: The BC Fire Code and Vancouver Fire bylaw clearly identify that the owner or owners authorized agent are responsible for carrying out the provisions of the code and ensuring that fire protection installations shall be maintained in operating condition at all times.

Q: Why do we have to complete an Annual Fire Inspections?

Q: Our previous fire vendor never did it that way?
A: While we can’t speak for any previous vendors, we can assure you that Community Fire Prevention will service all Fire Hydrants as per the BC Fire Code, Vancouver Fire Bylaw and all manufactures requirements. Community Fire Prevention removes and lubricates all hydrant internal parts as well fully opens and flows hydrants for not less than 1 minute as indicated in NFPA 25.

Q: Our hydrant has never been used, what can go wrong with it?
A: A lot! Over the course of a year, and especially winter a lot happens below the ground. Winter frost, ground upheaval, road salt and sand all can easily cause a Fire Hydrant to become impaired. Also, with the amount of construction in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland water mains are constantly being worked on and the possibility of foreign debris entering the water supply increases each time. An operational hydrant is an integral part to all emergency first responders!
